Barbara McCauley’s April 2007 Newsletter
Happy Spring! I'm so sorry I've been out of touch in my e-mails and online, but for the past four weeks, I've been very sick with pneumonia and have been in and out of the hospital. I am happy to say I am recovering at home now, but it's going to take some time to get my strength back. Thank you to everyone who has sent me e-mails and notes, and I apologize I have not been able to answer them. Hopefully over the next couple of weeks I'll get caught up.
I'll also like to say that I currently have a book out, "Blackhawk's Affair" and I hope you get a chance to pick it up or order online.
Hope you are all healthy and enjoying the spring. My best to you and yours--I'll be in touch!
Warmest Regards,

Barbara McCauley’s February 2007 Newsletter
Happy Belated Valentine’s Day! How could I let
this month pass without wishing you all love and kisses? February is
Barbara McCauley’s Official Celebrate Romance Month, and whatever
your plans are, I hope you have a great one. I’m thinking some
candlelight, some champagne, maybe some Barry White. Oh, and chocolate,
of course. What’s Valentine’s Day without chocolate!
And speaking of romance, I should mention that I’ve
had two SECRETS! books hit the shelves,
one last October, “Blackhawk’s
Betrayal,” and a December book, “Blackhawk’s
Bond.” My next SECRETS! book, “Blackhawk’s
Affair,” will be out this April, and I will send another
newsletter in a few weeks to tell you more about Alexis Blackhawk and
Jordan Grant. Both stubborn, both determined, these two gave me fits
on more than one occasion! But more about them later…
To everyone who has taken the time to write and drop
me a note, I thank you so much. I’ve had some problems with spammers,
so some of my e-mails may have been lost. I apologize for any questions
or comments I may not have answered—please know that I make every
attempt to response to all my e-mails. My webmaster is working on the
problem, and I hope to have it resolved soon. It makes me so mad I
want to spit!
Writing romance novels can be fun and exciting, but make
no mistake, it’s hard work! Over the past few weeks, I’ve
had a lot of people ask me for writing tips, so I wrote two articles, “Nine
Tips To Make Your Reader Fall In Love,” and “Seven Books
No Writer Should Be Without.” You can see these articles, and
more, at www.romancenewstoday.com I
welcome all comments (not just the good ones!)
Contest News!
The winner of my lavender neck wrap and an autographed copy of " Blackhawk’s
Betrayal" is Karen Barnett, from Minnesota!
AND THIS MONTH’S winners of not one, but TWO books, “Blackhawk’s
Betrayal” AND “Blackhawk’s
Bond” are, Marty Fryman, from Indianapolis, Julie
Stroup, from Ohio, and Melissa Lawson, from Rhode Island. Congratulations,
all!
My new prize is a rose scented sachet
pillow and a copy of “Blackhawk’s
Bond.” Enter here.
Once again, Happy Valentine’s Day!
Dedicated to Bringing More Romance and Love Into Your
Life,

August 2006
I’m finally up for air from my last two deadlines
and before I go under again, I wanted to say hi to everyone! It’s
been a hectic few months and, like most of you, juggling work, family,
house and life is always a challenge. As the saying goes, “Some
days you’re the windshield, some days you’re the bug.” I
figure as long as I have more windshield than bug days, I’m ahead
of the game!
What have I been working on, you ask? I’ve just
finished two of my next four Blackhawk books! They will all be SECRETS!
books, and the first, BLACKHAWK’S BETRAYAL will
be out in October 2006. In December, BLACKHAWK’S
BOND will hit the stands just in time for Christmas, then BLACKHAWK’S
AFFAIR will be out next April, 2007, and last but not least, BLACKHAWK’S
MISTRESS, July 2007. Three sisters, one brother, all united
by blood, divided by secrets, are about to fall…
My
current book out, NIGHTFIRE,
is part of a summer reading reprint program by Silhouette. If you don’t
already have it, you can find it at the bookstores now!
And the winners are…
I’ve kept you all waiting way too long!
Marie Mitchell, from Ohio, is the winner of my spa prize! My three
book winners are: Leanna Morris, from Illinois, Shirley Younger,
from Pennsylvania and Patty Boutin, from New Hampshire. You ladies
will all receive a copy of “Nightfire.” Thank
you to everyone who has signed my guest book, and especially to those
of you who drop me such wonderful notes and send pictures. (see new
photos on my scrapbook) On those days
when I feel like “the bug” you really lift my spirits!
My next contest I am giving away the most incredibly
soft, lavender scented neck wrap that will soothe your aches and relax
you at the same time. I love it so much, I had to buy one for myself!
I will also be giving away three copies of “Nightfire”,
my current book out. Good luck everyone!

It’s finally cooled down here in Southern California.
Yeah! We had temps between 105 and 119 degrees for three weeks straight!
Needless to say, I was quite cranky about it, and my poor garden took
quite a hit. Lost most of my baskets and container gardening and what’s
left is pretty wilted. A lot of my shaded areas are all right, but
not thriving as in years past. At this point, I’m just trying
to keep ahead of the weeds and I’ll start getting beds ready
for fall planting. At least the tomatoes are doing well, though, so
we’re having lots of salads!
The annual Romance Writer’s of America’s conference
was in Atlanta this year. I had a wonderful time reconnecting with
friends from around the country and meeting new friends, as well. The
Harlequin party at the Ritz was awesome, with fountains of flowing
chocolate, champagne and a crazy, wild dance floor! Everyone looked
wonderful and had a great time. I also had the honor of being a presenter
for the RITA Awards ceremony, for the Best Short Contemporary of 2005,
(the winner was Liz Fielding). I’ve posted some new pictures
on my site, if you’d like to take a
peek….
Now for some sad news. My twelve year old German Shepherd,
Max, started having seizures and was so sick we had to have him put
down. There were days he drove me crazy because he liked to dig in
my pots, but he was my constant companion and I miss him so much. My
daughter gave me a small rose bush I will plant in his honor. Thanks,
Max, for twelve wonderful years.

Please stop by anytime and say hi—I love hearing
from all of you!

March 1 , 2006
It’s
March! St. Patrick’s Day is almost here and you know everyone is
Irish on St. Patrick’s Day. Surfing the net, I found a few items
every household should have for this special occasion. A “Designated
Drunk” T-shirt, green hot chocolate, a sequined Leprechaun’s
hat and my personal favorite, a Shamrock toilet lid cover! Poor St.
Patrick must be rolling in his grave. And while we’re on the
subject, what do we know of this mystery man? Here’s a quick
bio: His given name was Maewyn, born in Wales around AD 385. At the
age of 16, he was sold into slavery by a group of Irish marauders who
raided his village. Six years later, he escaped and went to Gaul where
he studied in the monastery under St. Germain. After much ado, and
adopting the Christian name of Patrick, he received quite a bit of
attention because of his success at converting pagans. He was arrested
by the Druids several times and escaped every time, setting up schools
and churches. His mission lasted for thirty years, after which he retired
and died on March 17, AD 461. Though folk lore credits Patrick for
driving the snakes from Ireland, there never were snakes native to
Ireland, and some people believe this is a metaphor for the conversion
of the pagans. The three leafed Shamrock was used by St. Patrick to
explain the Trinity, and is now the traditional icon for the holiday.
The first year St. Patrick’s Day was publicly celebrated in America,
was in Boston, 1737.
My favorite Irish actors? Colin
Farrel, of course, Pierce Brosnan, (my favorite James Bond!) Gabriel
Byrne and a newcomer, Johnathan Rhys Meyes.
My favorite Irish food? Corned
beef and cabbage. (Bailey’s Irish Cream on the rocks is yummy,
too!)
My favorite Irish singer? Loreena
McKennitt. (Have you heard “The Highwayman”? Awesome.)
My favorite Irish saying? “Kiss
me, I’m Irish.” (okay, so maybe it’s not exactly
an expression, but I like it, anyway!)
Now that my Irish duty is done, (yes, I’m half
Irish, the good half, my mother always said) let me tell you who MY
VALENTINE’S DAY WINNERS ARE:
Autographed copies of Name
Your Price: Pearl Elliot Berger,
from New Mexico, Georgia Schneider,
from Alabama and Melissa Vo, from
Pennsylvania.
The Bear, Godiva Chocolates and Autographed Book was
won by Nicole Smith, from New York.
CONGRATULATIONS, LADIES! THANKS FOR VISITING MY SITE.
Now for my next prize--SPA
PRODUCTS! Here’s a Day of Relaxation that includes, bath
salts, body lotion, bath oil, soap, bath ball, bubble bath, wash
cloth and terry cloth carrying case! And, of course, an autographed
book! Let the kids fight, so what if the plumbing needs repair, who
cares if bills are due? You’ll be happily soaking in your tub,
reading a romance novel.

Good luck to everyone! Winners
will be posted on my site in April and announced in my next newsletter.
Now on to writing news. My next SECRETS! book, Blackhawk’s
Betrayal will be out in October. When we get closer, I’ll
tell you more, but for now I’ll just say something spicy is
cooking in the kitchen. And regarding the book I’m writing
now, remember Dylan Bradshaw, from Taming
Blackhawk? Well, I finally found the perfect woman for
this mysterious rancher, but she’s going to give him fits.
Dylan is now D.J. Bradshaw, and he is one hunky, but temperamental
hero. This book will be a little different for me, but I’m
anxious to take on the challenge.
My garden news: we’ve been working on the storybook
garden, but it’s slow going. Tore out a chain link fence, cleaned
up winter mess, laid more rocks for paths and my hubbie is putting
in sprinklers and electrical. With all the rain we’re having,
work will stop for awhile, then we’ll need to finish up plumbing,
fence and electrical before I can get the pond working and plant. Sooo
much to do, but each step brings us a little closer. The last dry spell
I started cleaning my flower beds and preparing for spring, which is
right around the corner. Can’t wait to get flowers and veggies
in. Oh, and all my chickens are laying now--such good girls! The parrot
is still hanging out, and I’m on turtle watch now...I’ll
keep you posted.
I’ll leave you with an Irish joke...
Four priests board a train for a long journey to
a church council conference. Shortly into the trip, one priest says "Well,
we've all worked together for many years, but don't really know one
another. I suggest we tell each other one of our sins." They
look nervously at each other but nod OK. The first priest says "Since
I suggested it, I'll go first. With me it's the drink. Once a year
I take off my collar and go out of town to a pub and drink myself
blind for a few days. Get it out of my system." They all look
each other again nervously, but the next priest
slowly starts "Wellll.....with
me, it's gambling. Periodically, I nick the money out of the poor
box and go to the races. Spend it all! I get it out of my system." The
third, who is really nervous now reluctantly says "This is very
difficult. My sin is worse. I take off my collar and go into the
red light district, pick out a lass, and spend a week in the saddle.
I REEEEAAALY get it out of my system." They all look at the
fourth priest waiting. He doesn't say anything. Then one of the four
speaks up "Come now, we've all told our innermost faults. It's
your turn." He looks at the others and starts hesitantly "Welllllll.....I'm
an inveterate gossip, and I can't wait to get off this train!"
Luck
O’ the Irish to Ya!

January 11, 2006
Happy New Year! Can you feel the breeze hit you as the
year flies by? I hope you all had a smashingly mah-velous holiday season
and brought 2006 in with a glass of bubbly. I celebrated with friends,
but left just before midnight to spend quiet time with the hubbie.
(We like to smooch in private!) Got up late the next day and I guess
my computer had been partying too hardy because it was comatose. Refused
to wake up and work for me, the tempermental brat! Replaced a cable
with wireless and that seemed to make my computer dance with delight!
I was ready to sit down and start sparks flying over the keyboard,
then a rain and thunder storm rudely interrupted and knocked out the
power. My sparks fizzled and with nothing else to do (no TV, radio,
oven, heat—it was stone age, I tell you!) I read by a cozy little
fire my husband built—until the smoke started billowing back
into the house and setting off the fire alarms. Oh, delight. The persistent
screeching of three fire alarms and a house full of smoke while it's
pouring rain and thundering and lightning outside. By mid-afternoon
we were good to go again, smoke aired out, power back up, and joy of
joys, my computer came back to life! A New Year's to remember and yes,
someday, I may laugh about it. Just not right now.
The
good news is NAME
YOUR PRICE was #1 on Waldenbooks for 12/17, #2 for 12/10
and #6 for 12/26. Very exciting to be on the list for three weeks in
a row (hey, I'm not going to pretend to be cool about it, I'm doing
a Snoopy Dance!) If you missed this one—the last book in the
Dynasties:Ashton series, you might still find a copy in your local
bookstore or order online. It was such a joy to see Trace and Becca
back together again after Becca called off the wedding five years earlier.
It wasn't easy, mind you. Trace was a bit hard-headed and Becca more
than a little apprehensive to let Trace get close again. Ah, but once
again, love conquered all. (of course!)
Survey Results—Don't Miss This—Go
Get Them Today!
Hope
you all got my survey results I sent out
in my last newsletter. If you missed it, you can still get it if you
go to www.romancenewstoday.com and
request a copy by filling out a guest book entry. The answers were
all so fascinating, sometimes surprising, and the comments were heartwarming.
A few made me laugh!. Thanks again to all of you who responded. I couldn't
have done it without you! Watch for the February issue of RomanceNewsToday coming
at the end of this month. New articles, more authors and bonus features,
too! Thanks to everyone who sent such fantastic comments to the staff
editor regarding this online magazine. If you're writing a book and
interested in winning a three chapter critique, just sign on in the
member community for a chance to win. Here's what some people are saying:
“…this magazine looks totally wonderful—am
looking forward to seeing the complete package…” Irene
from NY
“…I look forward to being a member of the
community!” Kari from Arizona
“Whoo Hoo! This is faboo!” Jolie from Utah
“…can't wait for the next issue!” Jackie
from California
Don't wait! Come see for yourself. All comments are welcome
and encouraged!
THE BEST VALENTINE CONTEST YET!

The most romantic day of the year deserves something
special so I'm giving away a BEAR, A
BOOK, AND
GODIVA CHOCOLATE! Three of my favorite
things! The bear is so cuddly soft you'll want to take him to bed,
the book, NAME
YOUR PRICE, I hope you'll also want
to take to bed, and the chocolate! Well, how decadent is that? Eating
chocolate in bed. How I wish I could give one to everyone, but alas,
only one lucky guest member can win these delights. I will however,
because it is a New Year--and you all know how I love to
give things away—also toss in THREE
MORE BOOKS AS GIVEAWAYS! Yes, you're eyes
didn't deceive you—I said three more books! I'm just not in
my right mind these days I'm so giddy and lightheaded from all that
New Year inspiration and best seller list excitement. Here's wishing
you all good luck. The winner will
be drawn on Valentine's Day and posted on my site, then contacted.
What I'm Reading Right Now
I usually read three or four books at a time, but right
now I'm reading Caroline Cross TRUST ME, December Desire 2005—Wow,
but this woman can write! She sucked me in from the first page. I'm
also reading Catherine Mann's January 2006 Intimate Moments, AWAKEN
TO DANGER, and the opening scene just blew me away! The third book
I'm reading is THE PRIZE WINNER OF DEFIANCE, OHIO. Not a romance,
but powerful, powerful stuff. It's the story of Evelyn Ryan, a Midwestern
housewife from the 50's who managed to raise her ten children and keep
an alcoholic husband at bay by entering jingle contests. She faced
poverty and starvation and all the time kept a positive attitude. This
is an amazing story of a true life heroine, ladies. Read this one before
it come out on the big screen staring Julianne Moore as Evelyn Ryan.
I'll leave you all with something I wrote on one of my
blogs to help your engine revved up for the new year. So for those
of you who didn't already read it, here it is....
Christmas may be over, but the New Year is almost here
and it's time for me to sit down and set my goals. Like most everyone
else, I'm highly motivated January 1 and ready to hit the ground running.
I don't think of goals as resolutions. I think of them as a game plan,
or a road map for the upcoming year. Or even better--a great big TO
DO list. (someone once told me I was the ultimate list maker--not sure
if they meant it as a compliment, but I'll take it as one!) Even though
I set my goals in January, I believe it's perfectly fine to improvise
as the weeks and months pass by. Opportunities I've never even considered
arise all the time. I am careful to be aware and watch for them, then
allow myself the flexibility to fit these new opportunities into my
already existing plan.
Here are four tips to think about when setting goals:
1. WRITE THEM DOWN
Don't just say you're going to lose weight or exercise more. You have to write
it down, using pen and paper (there's a chemical stimulated from doing this)
Put them some place you can see them every day and LOOK AT THEM. (My GOAL list
usually runs between two-three pages of a spiral bound notebook I keep by my
computer. I list EVERYTHING I can think of I want to achieve that year, from
big (remodel the kitchen) to small, (organize my book shelf) from reasonable
(write read ten non-fiction books) to ridiculous. (win the lottery) I leave
nothing out and add things as the year progresses)
2. BE SPECIFIC
Don't just say I want to exercise more or eat heathier. Think in DETAILS. Know
EXACTLY what you want, be it ten pounds, walk 3 miles two times a week, read
one non-fiction book a week.
3. VISUALIZE
SEEING what you want helps you move closer to achieving it. Establish a clear
picture in your mind, right down to how achieving this goal WILL MAKE YOU
FEEL. You are wearing that little black number, size 8. See the label, feel
the fabric on your skin. Work it, you sexy thing! Maybe you just want to
clean out your closet. SEE your closet neat, think about how good it makes
you FEEL. I can't explain this, but something magical happens when I do this.
You've got nothing to lose--try it!
4. BALANCE
When setting your goals, keep in mind ALL areas of your life. Health, Finances,
Family, Friends, Spiritual. Make sure you include goals that cover the entire
spectrum of your life. Balance makes us happier, healthier and a lot more
sane. (Most of the time anyway!)
Do I achieve all my goals? Of course not. But every one
I do accomplish, no matter how big or small, I am motivated to move
on to the next. I don't beat myself up if I fall short, either. I just
move it to the next year. Focus on what you DO ACHIEVE, not on what
you don't.
I suspect I'll have more to say about this subject later,
but since one of my big goals right now is to finish a book, I've got
to get writing!
Best Wishes to Everyone for a Wonderful New Year!

December 20, 2005
Merry Christmas!
Christmas
is the most magical time of the year for me. Decorating the Christmas
tree. (Or in my case— trees !) Putting up the outside lights.
(I go just a little crazy.) Baking and shopping and parties. My Writer's
Luncheon was this past week and it was wonderful sharing the day with
such amazing ladies.
They brought the yummiest dishes! I'm collecting recipes
to add to the recipe page on my site. We exchanged gifts and stole
them (item is frozen after the second steal) But best of all, we laughed
and talked and shared our friendship. I am blessed to have these terrific
ladies in my life. I wish the same blessing to each and every one of
you.

I'm also excited because NAME
YOUR PRICE hit the stands and is number two on Walden's
List! Now there's an early Christmas present for me! If you're
out shopping or by your local bookstore, check it out. The book
takes place during Christmas, as well, so you know there has to
be a little magic in the book!
Another
exciting thing is that the January Premier Issue of Romance News Today
has just hit the Internet. Check out this
e-zine (online magazine) at www.romancenewstoday.com.
Learn what romantic resolutions every woman should make, secrets of a bestselling
romance author (okay, I confess, I wrote the article!) and there's a fantastic
bonus article by Jo Leigh you won't want to miss! And if you're writing a novel,
you can enter my contest for a critique. Let me know what you think!
Now to announce the winners of my monthly
contest, and the three winners of my survey contest:
Anita Hunt from North Carolina
won the bear.
Crystal Broyles won the
sparkling red shoe ornament.
Jennifer Yates won the
black and white ornament
Patti Rueb won the Santa
ornament
All winners also receive an autographed book. Congrats,
ladies, and thank you to everyone for visiting my site and for answering
the survey questions. (See the survey results
here.)
May you all enjoy the beauty and love of this holiday
season. Thank you all for being a part of my life.

October 25, 2005
HAPPY AUTUMN! LOTS TO SHARE
THIS MONTH…
Just back from a Writer's Retreat—had a great time! We
(ten writers) all read and discussed Susan Elizabeth Phillips book “Ain't
She Sweet?” What a spirited discussion we had! We all agreed she's
an amazing writer, but we were a little more divided on which characters
we liked or didn't like and their motivations for doing the things
they did. Always fun to share thoughts about books and analyze why
we do or don't like a story. I recommend this one, everyone, but then,
hey, it's Susan Elizabeth Phillips! We also discussed how to get organized,
which I haven't been lately. I came home determined to get at least
one of my bookcases in order, so I'm currently knee deep in books I'm
sorting through and moving around. Since I had run out of room in my
bedroom bookcase, my TBR pile on the floor had started growing. So
many fantastic books to read! I have a really hard time letting books
go, but I've seriously run out of room. Time to donate the ones I've
read and make way for the new. Then I need to start on my office…
I'm working on my fall garden, but running behind. I
hope to have some new pictures next month. I did get a pretty good
picture of my resident parrot, though, and I thought I'd share. He's
(well, I don't know if it's a he, but because he's been so difficult
to get close to, I guess I naturally said “he”) been hanging around
all summer and I hope he stays around for the winter, too. He's so
pretty!

I'm currently working on BLACKHAWK'S
BETRAYAL, the next book in my SECRETS! series and the first
of four books that continue the Blackhawk family. William Blackhawk
might be dead, but his evil deeds just seem to go on and on…This
book doesn't come out until later next year, so I'll drop a few “secrets” over
the next few months.
My next release is NAME
YOUR PRICE, coming out in December. This is the last
book of the Desire DYNASTIES: ASHTONS series. I hope you've all
had a chance to pick up the other eleven books of the continuity—I'm
certainly in good company with these talented ladies. My book,
about rediscovering lost love, was a joy to write and I SO wanted
these two people back together, even when they didn't think they
ever could be.

MY OCTOBER CONTEST
THE WINNER OF MY OCTOBER DRAWING IS LATESHA
BALLARD IN NEW JERSEY . Congrats Latesha—you won an autographed
copy of BLACKHAWK
LEGACY and the velvet brocade pillow and sachet. My two
book winners this month are JACKIE WISHERD IN
LA MESA, CA and VANIA GIZZI IN ITALY!
Thank you all for visiting my site and signing my guest
book.
HERE'S MY NOVEMBER PRIZE

An autographed copy of BLACKHAWK
LEGACY AND
BUT WAIT—THERE'S MORE!!!
That's right! I'm contest crazy this month, ladies. I'm
holding a special contest for everyone who sends me photographs of Weddings,
Brides and Babies or a Good News story, just a few words,
about a happy memory or time in their life, present or past. These
stories and pictures will be posted on my website for everyone to see!
The picture can be your wedding, your daughter or son, Aunt Matilda's
son, or the niece of that annoying woman in your office. I just want
brides and wedding pictures and babies. The story can be anything at
all—how your husband proposed, when you found out you were pregnant
(assuming this was a happy moment) that romantic vacation, the surprise
party—anything at all! You don't have to send both, either a picture
or a story, (unless you want to!) The winner will be randomly selected
and you will win a satin LOVE pillow with a pocket where you can put
your wishes and dreams, and an autographed copy of MISS
PRUITT'S PRIVATE LIFE.

Come on, ladies, e-mail me your pictures and stories
at bmccauleybooks@aol.com or
snail mail to: Barbara McCauley, 21434 Ingomar Street , Canoga Park
, CA 91304 . Let's share those Happy Moments with everyone.
NOVEMBER MAN OF THE MONTH
Come see pictures of LONNIE McDERMOTT,
my November Man of the Month—and
I'm not talking turkey here, ladies!. Lonnie could SO be on the cover
of a romance novel! But he's not just good looking, he's fantastically
nice, too! Come check out my latest hunky man and read his bio. I invite
you all to send me pictures of the men in your lives, too, ladies.
Over twenty-five, please—younger than that and I'll put them up in
my babies section!

BARB'S
BLOG—I'm still new at this, but it's been fun. Would
love to have you all stop by and say hello—drop a comment or two.
My webmaster is going to be changing the format, but not sure exactly
what it will be. Thanks to everyone who's come by to take a look.
Other than the Soldier's Heart story, I think I like the newscaster
story the best…
CHRISTMAS IN THE CLOUDS
I just saw a special screening of a darling romantic
comedy called “Christmas In the Clouds” This movie was great fun! The
Native American element is magical (the “Warrior Mouse is adorable)
The humor will make you laugh out loud (the vegetarian chef is hysterical)
and the romance will make you sigh. (Talk about a hunky hero and a
gorgeous heroine!) It will be coming out in limited release this holiday
season, but if you have an opportunity, I highly recommend you treat
yourself and go see this one! Go to www.christmasintheclouds.com ,
and check out their clips.
That's it for now. I am thinking of a survey for this
month, too. If I can pull it together, I'll e-mail you all.
Many Blessings to All,

September Newsletter 2005
For me, the end of September always marks the beginning
of the holiday season. Okay, okay, I know most of you don't even want
to think about Thanksgiving yet, let alone Christmas, but
after Labor Day, after school is back in session, after the long, hot
haul of mid-summer, there's a change in the air that always invigorates
me. The mornings are cooler, the days shorter, the nights cozier. My
mind turns to goblins, turkeys and shopping, shopping, shopping. (that
thing I say I'm going to do early every year)
Whatever fall means to you, I hope you'll take the time
to stop and enjoy the moment, breathe in the crisp air and appreciate
the beauty around you and all that you have. My prayers are with all
the victims of Mother Nature's most recent wave of disasters. Like
me, I know that most of you have already contributed whatever you can.
In the upcoming weeks and months, our prayers and continuing help will
be needed, especially with the holidays approaching. One of my favorite
charities has always been www.feedthechildren.com and
I've always enjoyed collecting toys for the Marines Toys for Tots program,
too. One of my readers, Lois Bates, referred me to www.mde.k12.ms.us to
help the devastated schools in Mississippi . I just printed out the
paperwork to adopt a school there and help any way I can. We all have
our favorites, and I know this year we'll all be reaching a little
deeper to help those in need. The Human Spirit is a magnificent, glorious
creature!
WHAT'S HAPPENING
I've finally come off the ceiling from my RITA win at
RWA national conference and I've been busy writing my next SECRETS!
book, BLACKHAWK'S BETRAYAL, which won't
be out until next year. I've really enjoyed getting back to the Blackhawk
family and in the next few months, on my website and in my newsletters,
I'll be sharing tidbits of what's to come. (First tidbit…Sam Prescott,
general manager of the Four Winds hotel in Wolf River, is driven to
distraction when Kiera Daniels (or is that her name?) suddenly
arrives in town and hires on as a waitress in the hotel's five star
restaurant. Kiera is hiding a secret, and Sam is determined to find
out what it is…)
My December Desire, NAME YOUR
PRICE, is the last book in this year's Dynasty series. Trace
Ashton is convinced that seducing Becca Marshall back into his bed
will rid him of his lingering desire for the woman who betrayed him
five years earlier. Oh, but men are such silly creatures, aren't
they? More about Trace and Becca later. In the meantime, be sure
and pick up the rest of the Ashton stories by your favorite Desire
authors.
Now for the fun stuff! My AUTOGRAPHED BOOK AND SACHET
PILLOW CONTEST WINNER IS…JENNIE FERRARO from
New JerseY! My three autographed book winners are TINA
RUMMER from Las Vegas, MICAL HOLCOMB from
Washington and SAUNDRA MCKENZIE from
Arizona . Congrats, ladies--I'll get your prizes right off to you!
My fall prize is an AUTOGRAPHED COPY of MISS
PRUITT'S PRIVATE LIFE, a velvet brocade lavender pillow
and lavender sachets. I'll also be giving away THREE AUTOGRAPHED
COPIES OF MISS PRUITT'S PRIVATE LIFE.
The first week in November, winners will be drawn randomly from
my guest book.

NEW!
BARB'S BLOG will be up
on my site by the time you receive this newsletter. If you're interested
in intellectual discussions of world events and philosophical insights,
DO NOT COME TO MY SITE. Think Funky Town (you know the song, “talk
about it, talk about it, talk about it”) rather than Mozart. My thoughts
(not deep thoughts, either, I warn you) will include MEN, SEX, BOOKS,
CHOCOATE, HAIR PRODUCTS, SEX, TV, CLOTHES and a hundred other topics
that you will not find in the world of academia, such as that great
lip gloss I found at the Mac counter or why I've watched DIE HARD around
a hundred times (okay, I may exaggerate at times) and what I love about
pulling weeds in the garden. And, girlfriends, since I like to write
about secrets in my books, I just may, in a moment of weakness, get
carried away and share a few of my own secrets…
COMING SOON!
Two new places to visit on my website coming soon!
One is READER NEWS, where
I will post good news and stories from all of you. Please send me a
story of something good that has happened to you (a kindness someone
showed you, a surprise birthday gift, a special trip--whatever.) Just
send me a few brief words so I can spread good cheer and positive stories.
I love sharing happy things.
The second is WEDDINGS, BRIDE,
and BABIES. I would LOVE to put up your pictures and brief
stories of these blessed events. Doesn't matter if the pictures are
old or new, just send them! Doesn't matter if it's you, your daughter
or the mailman's cousin, just send them! E-mail to bmccauleybooks@aol.com or
snail mail copies to Barbara McCauley, 21434 Ingomar Street , Canoga
Park , CA , 91304 . (don't send originals, I can't mail back) This
may turn into a contest, ladies, so JUST SEND THEM!
CUDDLE UP
Here's an interesting tidbit of info I just read: a study
published in the Journal of Psychosomatic Medicine found
that thirty-eight couples who discussed a happy moment together, watched
five minutes of romantic film and shared a 20 second hug had lower
levels of stress hormones and an increase in oxytocin, a hormone associated
with maternal love, which is good for your heart. Shoot, I could have
told you that! So snuggle away, everyone.
That's it for now. Stop by and say hi anytime! Happy
Fall!
All the Best,

August Newsletter 2005
I'm doing a Snoopy
dance!
I have no words to tell you all how excited I am! I WON
A RITA for MISS
PRUITT'S PRIVATE LIFE at the Romance Writers' of America ® National
Conference in Reno! MISS PRUITT, the
last book in my SECRETS! series, won Best Short Contemporary category
at the awards ceremony on July 30 at the Reno Hilton. After nine nominations,
I am THRILLED that I finally brought this beautiful statue home. Since
I can't make a necklace out of her, I guess she'll be sitting next
to my computer! I will admit I was nervous as my category came up (thank
you Michelle Thorne for giving me a little stuffed bear to squeeze)
I will always remember that MAGICAL moment when the master of ceremonies
said, "And the statue goes to...MISS PRUITT... After that I couldn't
hear because my editor, Melissa Jeglinski, on one side of me, and Roxanne
St. Clair, on the other, both screamed. I honestly felt numb and so
excited I was shaking. I have no idea how I gave an acceptance speech,
but somehow I managed! Considering the talented writers I was up against
(including Roxanne!) I'm amazed that it's me sitting here with this
golden beauty. (Yep--she's right next to me as I write this!)

MY BIG THANKS TO ALL OF YOU WHO WROTE AND WISHED ME WELL
BEFORE I LEFT FOR CONFERENCE AND TO ALL OF YOU WHO HAVE WISHED ME WELL
SINCE I GOT BACK! I wouldn't have a career without such wonderful people
as yourselves and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Back to the conference--it was great fun!. My roomies,
Sandra Paul, Barbara Benedict, Angie Ray and I shared a spacious, beautiful
suite with TWO bathrooms--what bliss! (We call ourselves The Suite
Gals and will soon have a community website that I'll tell you more
about later.) From our room, the view of the city was beautiful and
at night, spectacular. We stayed up to the wee hours of the morning
every night (Angie and I are the lightweights, but managed to stay
up until 3:30 one morning! The hotel/casino was huge, the food at the
luncheons terrific, as were the speakers, Debbie Macomber and Susan
Elizabeth Phillips. The Harlequin party at The Peppermill Hotel and
Casino was one of the best ever and dancing was non-stop. Kudos to
Harlequin for once again treating their authors so wonderfully!

Other BIG news from the conference--I went to Jo Leigh's
wedding! Yep, right there in front of friends and family and her editors,
Jo Leigh got married to Laurence Wendelken! It was a beautiful ceremony
at the chapel in the hotel and Jo looked beautiful. (she cried through
most of the ceremony and made all of us cry, too!) We all went up to
Jill Shalvis's room for champagne and cake and celebration. CONGRATULATIONS
Jo and Laurence! (see pics on my scrapbook page) May you be blessed
with a long, happy life together.
It was wonderful getting together with old friends and
meeting new ones, and I came home exhausted, but very happy. I already
can't wait for next year! If you'd like to see pictures from the conference,
go to my scrapbook page, and also check out my journal from conference.
Never a dull moment with my wild and crazy friends! (you know that
laughter alleviates stress, builds your immune system and reduces signs
of aging? Never miss an opportunity to laugh!)
Now on to my website July
contest...
THE WINNER OF MY JULY TOTE BAG AND AUTOGRAPHED COPY OF BLACKHAWK
LEGACY IS...DEBRA FRISCHKORN from
Wisconsin ! Congratulations, Debra! Hope you enjoy! And my three
AUTOGRAPHED BOOK WINNERS ARE: JOAN WOODS,
in Florida , SHARON BERGER in New
Mexico and PAM PELLINI in Connecticut
. Hope you enjoy the summer reading, ladies!
Next
month, in honor of my RITA, I will be giving away three autographed
copies of MISS
PRUITT'S PRIVATE LIFE, plus a gorgeous EMBROIDERED ROSE
PILLOW AND SACHET. Good luck to everyone who's in my guest
book!
AIN'T LOVE GRAND...
I must share a story from one of my readers, Melissa
Lawson, who recently told me the story of how her fiance proposed....."He
found my copy of THE WEDDING KNIGHT, by Joanne Rock, took a plastic
bookmark holder and removed the bookmark and wrote his own love poem
to me," Melissa says, "then he tied the ring to the tassel." After
she read the poem and saw the ring, he then proposed. (He had me at
the love poem, Melissa!) "LOVE IS FABULOUS," Melissa says,
and I'd like to add, "WE ALL AGREE." Best of luck to you,
Melissa, and keep us updated on the wedding!
I intend to add a READER'S GOOD NEWS to my website and
Melissa's story will be my first entry. I would love to hear good news
from all of you, so please send me your stories!
I would also like to thank Marie and Rob Brown for sending
me a memorial pin for the four Royal Canadian Mounties who were killed
while on duty . I proudly wore this beautiful pin on my badge at conference,
and I would like to extend my condolences to their families and friends.
I salute brave men and women worldwide who risk and sacrifice their
lives in order for the rest of us to live safely.
News here at home...It's hot, hot , hot! It's been over
a hundred every day for almost three weeks. I had to laugh when I was
complaining about the heat and one reader who came to my site told
me I didn't know heat until I lived in Kansas ! Okay, I've never been
to Kansas, I admit, so I'll ease off on my complaining (just a little)
My garden is frazzled and not much to look at right now, but I'm getting
lots of veggies and most of my shade plants are holding up, so I'm
thankful for that. Too hot to work in the garden until fall, so I guess
I'll have to focus on writing...
And speaking of writing...I'm back to work on my next
SECRETS! book, which won't come out until next year, but I'll keep
you all updated. My next release is a December Desire, NAME
YOUR PRICE, which I will tell you more about as the release
date gets closer.
I plan on adding some new things on my site over the
next month, including a writer's page, so check back often if you're
curious what I'm up to!
Stay Cool! Thanks to all of you who visit my site and
sign my guest book! I LOVE hearing from everyone!
All the Best,

Barbara McCauley's July 2005 Newsletter...
Can't believe we're in July already! What happened to
June? I'm way behind on the million and one things I want and need
to do (bet this sounds familiar to everyone) But mostly that's just
because I always give myself more to do than I possibly could finish.
I'm a fanatical list maker and I love crossing off goals I've accomplished.
Keeping a list also keeps me a little bit organized (though from the
looks of my office you you wouldn't think so)!and it gives me somewhat
of a direction to take. This is especially important in my writing.
It's easy to get distracted, and a list helps keep me on track. So
here's my a list of some of the things I HAVE done in the past month:
WRITING: Finished my last
book, NAME YOUR PRICE, (the last book
in the Desire Dynasty: Ashton series--a December book) and started
the first book of my next Blackhawk stories. Can't wait to tell you
more about the upcoming books in my SECRETS! series. The Blackhawk
family is about to get a big surprise... And if you haven't read BLACKHAWK
LEGACY, you can order online or at your favorite bookstore!
VACATION
TO THE BEACH: Absolute wonderful trip up the coast to a resort
directly on the beach. It was just before schools let out and weather
was still overcast, but it was like having our own private beach.
We had a gorgeous view of the ocean from our room. I've put pictures
in my scrapbook. Southern California beaches are awesome, and usually
crowded, so it was such a treat to have the beach to ourselves.
GARDEN: I've been a busy
girl in the garden. Not just keeping up with the flowers and veggies
already there, but put in two new archways and finally started the "storybook" garden
I've been thinking about for a couple of years. Found an amazing small
scale water wheel, bought a pond liner and my husband has been working
like crazy. (Bless the darling man--he truly is my hero!) He cleared
out trash, leveled dirt, built retaining wall, laid a stone path, dropped
in a couple of big rocks (they're fake, but look so real.) and put
in a liner for a small pond. LOTS more to do--like my books, it's a "work
in progress." I'll get pictures up after I get some plants in.
I've had an incredible bird "visitor" in my garden for the
past week, also. A gorgeous Golden Mantled Rosella--a bright red headed
parrot with yellow and black speckled back and green and blue wings.
(See picture in my garden
section) Probably someone's pet that escaped. I can't catch it,
so I'll just enjoy it and the beautiful chortling sound it makes. Also,
my hubbie and I were "treasure hunting" and found an antique
bathtub I'm going to put in the garden, as well. It's made of galvanized
metal, with a wood rim around the top, probably early 1900's--(see
a picture in my garden
section). We also picked up three new chicks, so I'm busy running
out to the coop making sure they are all right with their heat lamp.
So far so good!
CONTEST WINNERS: The winner
of my pink bath set is SUSAN LATHEN in
Nebraska, and my three autographed book winners (Blackhawk
Legacy) are: GEORGIA SCHNEIDER in
Alabama, CHRISTA RUNGE in Ontario, (Canada)
and KAY MONTE in Louisiana. Congratulations,
ladies!
Here's
a picture of AMELIA RICHARDS, the winner of my dreamweaver and rose
quartz heart contest. Thanks, Amelia, for sending me your picture!
MY JULY CONTEST will be three more autographed
books and patriotic tote bag with mini candles, small GOD BLESS AMERICA
sign, flag scarves and an autographed copy of BLACKHAWK
LEGACY. Will YOUR picture be in my next newsletter? Good
luck to everyone!
CONFERENCE: Romance Writers
of America national conference in Reno is almost here! Bought a new
blouse, but not much time for shopping. Made plans to see my editor
and friends from all over the country. RSVP'ed that I would be at the
RITA nominees party. Have to put down on my new list to buy a dress
for the Harlequin bash--they really know how to throw a party and are
so great to the authors. I can't wait for all the festivities. With
the conference in Reno, there will be plenty of excitement. (But will
I come home with that RITA...?)
WRITER'S RETREAT: Writing
get-together with fellow authors Angie Ray, Sandra Paul and Barbara
Benedict was terrific. We plotted and schemed and laughed a whole lot!
Came home tired, but inspired! My "suite" gals, as I call
them (because we always share a suite when we get together) are fantastic!
We'll all be going to Reno together, so I'll have plenty to report
when we get back.
So you can see I've been busy! And it doesn't stop there.
Lots more coming up--I'll be sure and share with you all! I love to
hear from you--please drop me a hello anytime.
Have a Wonderful Summer!

Barbara McCauley's May 2005 Newsletter...
Can't believe how fast the time flies--especially when
you're NOT having fun. A bout of bronchitis had me laid up for a couple
of weeks and I got WAY behind on everything. So happy to say I'm feeling
much better and back to work!
My Big News is that MISS
PRUITT'S PRIVATE LIFE has been nominated for Romance Writers
of America Best Short Contemporary of 2005! I'm so excited! It's
such an honor, whether I win or not, I'm just so thrilled to be
nominated. The winner will be announced in Reno at RWA's national
conference--if I win, you will all be the first to know (well,
except for the other 2,000 people who attend the event!
This is my ninth nomination, ladies--cross your fingers
for me!
Now, for the fun stuff! For all of you waiting for the
results of my Boyd's Shopping Bear contest, my Survey Contest results
and winner of the rose quartz heart and Dreamcatcher, plus my autographed
books giveaway, I apologize for being so late announcing the news.
Here goes.....
My winner for the Boyd's Shopping Bear is Leah
Hurwich in Maryland. Congrats Leah and
thanks for visiting my website! My
winner for the Rose Quartz Heart and Dreamcatcher is Amelia Richard! Congrats,
Amelia and thanks so much for filling out my survey form--your prize
will soon be in the mail. I'll recap the survey results later in
this newsletter. Now for my autographed
book winners: Nina Crespi, Robin Bell, Rachel Nosack , Julie Stroup and Cindy
Huffman. You will all receive a copy of Blackhawk Legacy or Miss
Pruitt's Private Life--your choice!
Check out my new Man of the Month--Rob Brown! This
is a real-life hero, ladies, one-time Royal Canadian Mounted Police
and a man who stands by his wife through a difficult time. To read
more about Rob, go to my Man of the Month and hear his story. This
one brought tears to my eyes and made me yell "Hooray for Heroes"
A HUGE THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO VISITED MY
WEBSITE AND TO EVERYONE WHO FILLED OUT THE SURVEY FORM--IT WAS GREAT
FUN READING ALL YOUR ANSWERS. I really
appreciate the time you all took, it helps me to plan future articles,
discussions and newsletter items. Any other suggestions any of you
might have to help me improve my website and make it more fun, please
let me know. I'm continually working on my updates, plus adding more
new things.
I received a note from one visitor asking about
my guestbook and expressing her concern that other people online
had access to viewing the information. I'd like to make it clear
that my "guestbook" is not
posted anywhere. The results on the form entry comes to me only and
that is where it stops. No one else on the Internet can view this
information. I completely understand the
concerns we face filling out forms online, but my guestbook is completely
safe!
I'm so happy to say I just finished my next book
and it will be a December Desire release,
NAME YOUR PRICE. This is the last book
of the continuing Dynasties: The Ashtons! I'll let you all know when
it's going to hit the shelves, but in the meantime I hope you've
had a chance to read the entire series--there's a great group of
authors writing this series and you won't want to miss it!
DARK SECRETS BREWING...
I'll be starting back writing more books for my SECRETS!
series, and I'll be continuing the Blackhawk family.
So many of you have asked me about the Blackhawks and when I'll be
writing more of their stories. No release dates on anything yet,
but I'll certainly let you know. If any of you missed Blackhawk
Legacy, you might want to find a copy and
read it before the next group of books come out. There's a dark secret
brewing with the Blackhawks that will be revealed in my next SECRETS!
book and it's going to send shockwaves through the family.
Now you all know you can't get a newsletter from me and
not hear about my garden! My flowers are blooming and my veggies are
growing--I'll even have zuchinni in the next few days! I've added several
bird and squirrel feeders in my yard and it's great fun watching the
critters come to feed. The squirrels are bottomless pits--and so brave--or
should I say brazen? I got them their own feeders to discourage them
from eating the bird's food and it helps, but they never seem to stop
eating! At the feeders I mostly have sparrows, towhees, gold finches,
finches, mourning doves and scrub jays (the jays are big bullies--chase
all the other birds away when they want to eat!) I've been trying to
get pictures of all the activity, but they don't always cooperate.
I also enjoy spotting birds I've never seen (just saw my first Blackheaded
Grosbeak--a pretty burnt orange bird with a black head) but haven't
been able to get any pics. I'll keep trying! I'm posting a lot of pictures
on my website of my garden and the "wildlife" plus some new
pictures in my scrapbook. Check them out!
I had a phenomenal response on my survey--a huge
thanks to everyone who participated!
Last month I asked these questions: 1. What
are your hobbies and what do like about them? 2. What
are your favorite TV shows? 3. What are
your favorite magazines? 4. Other than
romance, what do you read?
Here are the results:
1. When it comes to hobbies,
reading came in first place by a landslide, then crafts, sewing (this
includes all needle work) gardening, art, computers, exercising, cooking,
shopping, genealogy, animals, then a wide assortment too numerous to
mention, but including some of the more unique: collecting Barbies,
darts, fishing and antique cars! You are all busy ladies!
My answer: Reading
, of course, and you all know I love gardening! I also like crafts,
all kinds, plus sewing and when I can, I enjoy flea markets.
2. The CSI and crime shows
came in tops! 24 was at the top also, sitcoms, reality shows (Survivor,
Apprentice, Makeover Shows and American Idol most popular) Desperate
Housewives and Medical Shows. Notable mention was Columbo, Gilmore
Girls, Soap Operas, Charmed, Sports and National Geographic. Whew!
There were a lot more mentioned, but I'd be writing all night if I
listed them all!
My answer: 24, Desperate
Housewives, Deadwood (liked first season better) Medium, Grey's Anatomy,
American Idol and the Apprentice. I also like animal shows and sometimes
home shows, but when I want to shut my brain down, I'll watch pretty
much anything!
3. You ladies all read
just about everything, with women's magazines coming in first, including
Cosmopolitan, Redbook, Glamour, then home magazines--Better Homes and
Gardens, Southern Living, then fitness and beauty magazines, then celebrity,
including People and Entertainment Weekly, then cooking, Romantic Times
and writing magazines, business, travel and history.
My answer: I subscribe
to so many and they stack up, then I read them between books in a
rush! Better Homes and Gardens, Sunset, Country Living, Home Companion,
Birds and Blooms, Romantic Times, Romantic Homes (I LOVE this one!)
Oprah, Martha Stewart and I'll read just about anything sitting in
front of me!
4. Overwhelmingly, after
romance, you all read mystery, crime and suspense, then history, paranormal,
science fiction, self-help, cookbooks, biographies, fantasy and classics,
pretty much in that order.
My answer: I really
do read everything, though only a little science fiction and fantasy.
Non-fiction, health, self-help, writing, biographies, arts and crafts.
Fiction, mostly contemporary, just about anything, plus I enjoy classics,
too. I'm always open to recommendations and love discovering a new
author who writes a just-can't put-it-down book.
So for now, that's it. Come check out the new pictures
on my website and all my updates and please, drop me a note and tell
me what's new with you!
All the Best,

Barbara McCauley's March Newsletter 2005
Happy St. Patrick's Day! ~ Happy Spring! ~ Happy
Easter!
What a busy month ahead! Since it finally stopped raining--we've
had nearly 34 inches, when our normal is around 14--it's time to get
out in the garden. Ground is still too wet to plant, but there's plenty
to do to get ready. I definitely need new beds for my veggies and then
there's lots of clean up and maintenance, plus I have an area behind
a shed where I'd like to create a " Fairytale Secret Garden " area
with gnomes and fairies and woodland creatures. But, as usual, I'm
ahead of myself! Lots of other things to do before I start a new project!
I was so happy to hear from so many of you how much you
liked my website changes. I love having this venue to reach out to
all of you and say hi, and I love hearing from you. My Man
of the Month, Chris Fregeau, was a resounding success, and while
Chris will still be on my site, my March
Man of the Month is Rick Cantor. Wait till you see this hunky fireman,
ladies! Many of you may even recognize Rick from an All State commercial
with a truck in a lake and a fireman helping --that's Rick! Come check
him out!
Also, I loved hearing that you liked my new recipe
section, too. My special tacos and Spanish rice, spagetti sauce,
and an artichoke dip are a few new ones I'll be adding this month,
so let me know what you'd like to see more of--I've got tons!
My darling plush rose bear and autographed Blackhawk
Legacy winner is Gladys Paradowski in Houston, Texas! I
got a lot of comments on how cute my bear is, and I'm so sorry, but
there can only be one winner. However, I do have five book
winners this month! They are: Robyn Phiebig, Amanda
Ott, Belinda Moore, Lisa Crawley and Patsy Cobb. Congratulations,
ladies--you will all receive an autographed copy of Blackhawk
Legacy !
And what do I have up my sleeve this month, you ask!
Here it is!
My prize for April is an autographed copy of
BLACKHAWK LEGACY and a sweet Boyd's Shopping Bear. She's too cute
for words, so here's a picture. (If you can't view her here,
come look at her on my website) My winner will be picked at random
on April 15th.

So many people have asked me if I will be writing Sean
and Melanie's story (Rebecca's sister and brother from Blackhawk
Legacy ) The answer is yes, but not for awhile. When I finish
the book I am working on, I will be starting more SECRETS! books
involving the Blackhawk's. There's trouble brewing in East Texas and
some big surprises are about to be revealed. I'll be keeping you all
updated on those sexy Blackhawk men and women.
I've also decided to have a survey this month!
Everyone who responds by April 10 will be entered
into a Special Survey Drawing and the
prize will be an autographed copy of BLACKHAWK
LEGACY and this Dreamcatcher and Rose Quartz Heart. The
legend has it that when early man first looking into this translucent
pink stone they thought they were looking into the love of a human
heart. Sweethearts through the ages would give rose quartz as a gift
of love, saying "As long as the stone is pink I will love you." To
carry or wear rose quartz is to be loved and to love forever.

Here are my questions:
- What are your hobbies, and what do you like about them?
- What are your favorite TV shows?
- What is/are your favorite magazines? Why?
- Other than romance, what do you like to read?
That's it--I'll post the results and my winners next
month. I can't wait to hear from you all!
All the best,

February 8, 2005
February is the month of romance! Like me, I suspect
most of you out there are incurable romantics and what better day to
remember those you love (not that we shouldn't remember them all the
time) Flowers, chocolate, cards, or maybe just a silly note that says "I
love you." Hugs and kisses are favorites of mine! And don't forget
to be good to yourself, too, especially when it comes to chocolate
. . .
Valentine Chocolate Rules
1. If you have melted
chocolate on your hands, you're not eating fast enough.
2. Chocolate covered raisins, cherries,
orange slices and strawberries all qualify as fruit. Eat as many
as you want.
3. Eat a chocolate bar before each
meal, and it will take the edge off your appetite.
4. If you can't figure out how to
get chocolates into the house without the kids noticing, eat them
in the parking lot
5. Put "Eat chocolate" at
the top of your list of things to do today. That way, at least
you'll get one thing done.
Win A Cuddly Rose Print Bear and an
Autographed Book!
I'll be drawing one lucky winner at the end of February.
Everyone in my guestbook is eligible (you don't need to sign up again
if you already have and your e-mail is correct)
Thank you to everyone who has already bought my first
single title, BLACKHAWK
LEGACY and dropped me a note to tell me how much you enjoyed
Dillon's and Rebecca's story. Many of you have asked if there will
be more Blackhawk stories and I'm happy to say YES! It will be a while,
but I will keep everyone updated. BLACKHAWK
LEGACY will be available for several months, (unlike the Desire
books that are only in the bookstores for a month) Also, several people
have asked me if Megan and Sean will have their own stories, and again,
the answer is yes, but not for awhile. So many books to write--so little
time!
New--Coming this February--Man of
the Month!
Remember the hunky Man
of the Month Desire covers? Silhouette stopped them
a couple of years ago and I don't know about you ladies, but I've
missed them! So I decided to create my own Man
of the Month! This February I'll be revealing my first real
life hero, Chris Freaugue, on my website--you won't want to miss
this! Send me pictures of your own real life heroes, and they just
might end up on my site, too!
My website has a new look! I've
also added several new pictures to my website and a recipe page, as
well, which I will continually add to. Come check it out!
Love and chocolate kisses,

January 19, 2004
HAPPY NEW YEAR! Has everyone made their resolutions?
I always set goals at the beginning of the year and keep them written
down in a journal that sits by my computer. Of course I get side-tracked,
but keeping them close helps keep me focused. This year I have lots
of writing to do! (some of you have asked me to write faster--I'm trying!)
I'm just finishing up MISS PRUITT'S PRIVATE LIFE now, then I'll start
on my next SECRETS! book, which will actually be a single title, not
a Desire. The title will be BLACKHAWK'S LEGACY, and won't be out to
later in the year. This book will bring the missing Blackhawk cousin,
Dillon, back into the picture and bring to justice the men who split
the Blackhawk family apart twenty-three years earlier. Dillion is one
tortured soul who needs the love of a good woman to heal him. And I've
got just the right one...
My heart goes out to all of you in the northeast right
now. I was only in weather that cold once, in Reno , and it was -14.
We stepped outside of the hotel and I remember I thought my jeans were
going to crack. My son and husband braved the ski mountain and were
actually interviewed on the news (who in their right mind goes out
in that weather when they have a choice?) This California girl sure
doesn't! Hope it warms up soon for everyone.
I'll be GIVING AWAY THREE BOOKS this month, and a basket
with Valentine candy. I wish I could give everyone something, but of
course I can't. Names are selected randomly by my webmaster--good luck
to everyone!
I'll be updating my website soon, putting up more pictures
and a couple new recipes, plus I'll be sending out a newsletter in
a couple of weeks, not only on what's coming up this year, but general
thoughts and trivia I'd like to share with you all.
I wish everyone a fabulous 2004, and I want to thank
each and every one of you for signing my guest book and especially
for writing me such kind notes. I can't always answer everyone, but
I appreciate your hellos and thank yous and well wishes. If there are
any questions, or suggestions, I'd love to hear them.
All the Best,

Happy Holidays!
Can't believe they're here so quickly (but don't we say
that every year?) I'll be enjoying Thanksgiving at my daughter's house
this year, we always have a big group and do the usual turkey feast
and subsequent food coma. I am blessed with wonderful friends and family
and truly do give thanks, not just Thanksgiving, but every day. I wish
you all a Happy Thanksgiving and thank you so much for taking the time
to come check out my website.
MY FIVE BOOK WINNERS FOR NOVEMBER ARE: Joy Isley, Sarah
Scott, Tina Yarbrough, Karrie Millheim and Ilene Mcvea. Congratulations
ladies!
It's been a very busy time for me. I had a wonderful
trip to the Grand Canyon (my pictures didn't turn out--I hope to get
some good ones from one of my brothers or sister) Can't believe how
awe inspiring it is. I hope to go back when I have more time and stay
at a hotel there so I can see the sunrise and sunset. The train ride
in from Williams included banjo picking entertainers, a Wyatt Earp
style sheriff and a train robbery. Had a great time.
I must say life hasn't been boring since I got home,
either. California always seems to have something going on. The fires
were very close to my house, though we weren't directly in danger,
but my daughter's home was and they came and spent some time with us
until the fires passed them by with no homes damaged, thank God. Air
was hard to breathe and ashes were like snow falling. Then, as soon
as the fires were under control (with 100 degree temperature to boot)
the weather changed in one day and temperatures dropped to the forties
and a freak storm dumped 5 inches of rain in two hours--very bizarre
weather. Again, it wasn't a problem at my house, but in other parts
of Los Angeles , the streets and homes were flooded with waist high
water. For the moment, "normal" has returned with 70-80 degree
weather. Just in time to get started on my fall garden. When I have
it finished, I'll put some pictures up in my scrapbook.
And me? I've been working on my next SECRETS! book, MISS
PRUITT'S PRIVATE LIFE. Marcy Pruitt, a home advice guru, has never
had a "private" life of her own and is determined to change
that--Evan Carver is more than happy to oblige the sweet and inexperienced
Miss Pruitt! I continue my Wolf River stories, introduce more characters
and by the end of this book will be ready to tell Dillon Blackhawk's
story. Dillon is one lone wolf about to be dragged out of his cave...
God bless you all and this wonderful country we live
in.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING

September 2, 2003
What a crazy summer it's been! Took forever to recover
from July RWA conference in New York , but I'm finally back to writing
on more of a schedule. I'm currently working on an anthology for Silhouette
which will be a 2004 June release SUMMER IN SAVANNAH. Maureen Child
and Sheri Whitefeather, two very talented Desire authors, will be writing
the other stories. It's different writing a novella, the pacing and
ability to fully develop character and setting are so limited, but
I'm enjoying the challenge. I also like that I can get right to the
relationship, which is between a DEA agent named Nick Sloane and Sophia
Alexander. Sophia is the sister of Tina Alexander, who is the heroine
of my next book, a 2004 January release THE CINDERELLA SCANDAL, which
will launch DYNASTIES: DANFORTHS, a wealthy Savannah family filled
with scandal and sex and wonderful love stories. I'll tell you all
more about my characters and their story as the time approaches.
So how about this weather! I've talked to people around
the country and they all tell me it's a weird year where they live.
It's been unrelentingly HOT in Southern California, over 100 nearly
every day where I live (and the politics are making world news, too,
thanks to Arnold !) I'll be looking forward to winter, which is never
really winter compared to the rest of the country, but hey, it's all
I know and I get COLD when it hits below fifty-five. Okay, I'm a wimp,
I admit it. Oh, and we're not just having fun with the heat, but throw
in a couple of small earthquakes, too! Nothing compared to the BIG
one that hit ten years ago, but enough to get my attention. And still,
with all of California 's oddness, I love it here and the year round
gardening is great.
And speaking of gardening, mine is not so great this
year. Few tomatoes, I'm sad to say, but lots of peppers and some eggplant
and zuchinni. My flowers are struggling in the heat. I can't wait for
fall planting. I'll share pictures after I get my fall garden in.
Thanks to everyone who has signed my guest book and said
hello. I try to answer questions and comments as often as I can. I
apologize if I missed anyone. I'll be putting together another basket
this week with an aloha beach theme, I'll get that picture up soon,
too.
All the Best,

June 17, 2003
I'M FOUR MONTHS OLD! At least, my website is. I've had
so much fun watching this "baby" grow and change. Every month
is something new and exciting, and the best part is hearing from everyone
who's dropped me a note. I apologize I haven't been able to answer
you all personally, but I'm really trying! If only there were more
hours in a day! I'll try to answer most of the questions I've been
asked in this newletter, but first I'd like to recap what's been going
on...
My February Desire THAT BLACKHAWK BRIDE was on WALDEN'S
BESTSELLER LIST TWO WEEKS and was a ROMANTIC TIMES TOP PICK .
My May Desire, WHERE THERE'S SMOKE... (book five in DYNASTIES:BARONES)
was on WALDEN'S LIST THREE WEEKS!
My June book, (on the stands right now!) SUMMER GOLD,
A WOLF RIVER SUMMER, a two in one book with Elizabeth Lowell, just
made the USA TODAY BESTSELLER LIST! Words cannot describe how happy
I am, and how grateful I am to each and every one of you who bought
these books. THANK YOU ALL!
ROLL OUT THOSE LAZY, CRAZY DAYS OF SUMMER!
I've had a great time giving away books and baskets,
and call me crazy, but I can't wait to give away more! You never know
when you'll open your mail box and voila! A book from me is sitting
there! I'm in a FREE BOOK FRENZY and can't seem to stop myself! Danalyn
Efrus won my first basket giveaway (the teddy bear), and Kim Westgaard
won the second (the bunny basket) The third time will be a charm for
one lucky lady (or gent!) My Spring Basket winner for best garden goes
to Melanie McCormick, who sent pictures of her mother's garden and
touched my heart with her sweet words about her mom. You're a gem of
a daughter, Melanie. Check out the pictures of Danalyn and Kim and
Melanie's Mom's garden on my GARDEN link and my SCRAPBOOK link. Maybe
you'll be next...
My other great news is that I'm a RITA finalist for my
May 2002 Desire TAMING BLACKHAWK, nominated for best short contemporary
of 2002. I'm up against some great books, but the way I see it, we're
all winners! The one lucky winner will be announced at the upcoming
Romance Writers of America Conference in New York this July. It's right
around the corner and I can hardly wait. Even though it gets a little
crazy, I always have a great time. I'll report back after conference
and give an update.
Went to BOOK EXPO at the Los Angeles Staples Convention
Center . It was huge! Harlequin/Silhouette had a wonderful booth. The
editors and marketing staff are all sooo nice. I also met Donna Hayes,
the President of Harlequin. What an impressive lady! I'm putting up
a couple of pictures in my Scrapbook, check them out.
GARDEN UPDATE: Had a great spring and early summer, everything
in wonderful bloom. I have a few new pictures up on my Garden link.
My veggies are coming along great, just got my first zuchinni. No tomatoes
yet, I can't wait. It's just starting to get warm here in Southern
California , usually by the 4th we're heating up!
And speaking of hot! I just got back from Las Vegas .
Whew! Over 100 every day. Had a great time with my hubbie and my son
and his girlfriend, then I plotted with fellow writers Jo Leigh, Debbi
Rawlins and Teresa Southwick. Now I'm home and back to work, though.
Some of you have asked me to write faster. I'm trying!
I'm dedicating the rest of my newsletter to answer a
question from one of my readers because I feel this issue is so important
to everyone.
STACY from Michigan says "I am very interested in
a career in the writing business, however, I seem to self-doubt myself
and don't get very far. What type of advice would you give me?"
Well, Stacy, I shared your question with eleven other
writers at a recent retreat and we each shared our thoughts, which
I put together. Here goes...
THE WRITER'S SEVEN STEPS TO SELF-CONFIDENCE
1. KNOW THAT EVERYONE HAS SELF-DOUBT
You are definitely not alone. Everyone I spoke to admitted
to varying degrees of self-doubt. It's an ongoing struggle. Accept
this as a natural part of being a thoughtful human being.
2. FEEL THE FEAR
USE your self-doubt. Rather than a problem, see it as
a challenge and use it as a strength to meet your goals. Humanize the
feeling. Visualize it as an entity, maybe a tiny creature you can have
a conversation with. Tell it to be quiet and behave.
3. JUST DO IT
Was there ever a better phrase? Take responsibility,
accept that ONLY YOU can make things happen. Educate yourself. Read
books about writing and how to, go to seminars, classes, listen to
tapes, join a critique group. Knowledge is power, but remember, nothing
replaces putting your butt in your chair at the computer.
4. SUPPORT SYSTEM
Writer's groups (Definitely Romance Writer's of America
) are a wonderful way to help you face the days when self-doubt really
rears its ugly head. It helps to have a group of friends you trust
to lift your spirits and keep you going. Only another writer really
knows what it's like to face that blank page and the days that words
simply make no sense. It's wonderful to share our feelings, good and
bad, with other writers. A WORD OF CAUTION HERE. Be very careful who
you let close. Without meaning to, some "friends" can suck
your creativity and energy. Even worse, some do it intentionally. Stay
far away from these people. If you haven't any one close by you, or
any groups, find an online group of POSITIVE people.
5. TURN OFF THE CRITIC
When we sit down to write, the critic needs to be sent
into the other room, or locked up, if necessary. Let your thoughts
out, write whatever comes, let the words flow. Only when you have a
first draft, THEN let the critic speak, though only in a kind, constructive
manner. Dont' worry about writing garbage, it can be fixed. Think of
it not as concrete, but as clay. You can sculpt and mold to your heart's
content (though be careful, you can overwork your writing. Sometimes
a little distance is good, too.) Don't think of the critic as your
enemy, but as your friend, your teacher, your guide. Again, though,
if your critic is not gentle and kind, teach it some manners, just
like our mothers taught us.
6. BE PATIENT
How do you get to Carnegie Hall? so the question goes.
Practice, practice, practice. Sorry, there's no short cut. Okay, so
maybe some people get there faster--DO NOT WORRY WHAT OTHER PEOPLE
DO OR DON'T DO. This is probably the most important piece of advice
I can give anyone. Learn from other people's successes and failures,
certainly, but do not use other writers' successess or failures as
a guide to your own success. The journey is yours and yours alone,
your path is your own. Enjoy that journey, make it fun.
7. CELEBRATE THE SUCCESS
Any success. Every success. Honor yourself and your achievements,
don't let anyone minimize what you feel good about. Getting a page
written, (a paragraph even!) Every accomplishment, no matter how small,
is important. Treat yourself when you meet a goal or something good
happens. Let yourself enjoy the moment, stretch it out. You deserve
it. TRUST yourself and KEEP THE JOY OF WRITING ALIVE by reminding yourself
WHY you want to write and how GOOD it makes you FEEL when all the hard
work comes together.
There you have it! Thanks, Stacy, for your question.
You made me think about my own self-doubts, too. Happy Writing!
And to everyone--Happy Reading. In the cool shade under
a tree, on a swing or lying on the soft grass, may you lose yourself
in the wonderful pages of a book.
Till Next Time,

June 16
Happy June! I just finished what will be my next book
out,THE CINDERELLA SCANDAL, the first book of the Desire DYNASTIES:DANFORTHS
series starting in January 2004. Tina Alexander, my heroine, gave my
hero, Reid Danforth, a tough time, but Reid is a man who gets what
he wants, which just happened to be Tina, of course. One of Tina's
sisters will be a heroine for an upcoming anthology in June 2004, but
we'll hear more about her later.
I'M SO EXCITED (just like the song!) WHERE THERE'S SMOKE...
was on the WALDEN'S BESTSELLER LIST for THREE WEEKS! And just as exciting
WOLF RIVER SUMMER, from the SUMMER GOLD two books in one with Elizabeth
Lowell was on the USA TODAY BESTSELLER LIST! A great big thank you
to each and every one of you who buy my books. I'm so grateful and
happy to have such wonderful readers!
Congratulations to KIM WESTGAARD, who lives in Crystal
Lake , Illinois . She won my bunny basket! Thanks so much Kim for the
picture. You and Bunny are adorable!
My book winners this past month were Hannah Beck from
Ridgefield, Connecticut, Libby Everett from Vicksburg, Mississippi,
Mary Ann Harcharik from Mission Viejo, California, Brenda Horney from
Davis City, Iowa, and last but certainly not least, Martha Lawson from
Rosedale, Mississippi. Happy Reading everyone!
And I'm not through giving things away, ladies! More
FREE books this month, plus free "goodies" are still to come.
You never know when you'll get something in the mail from me...
If you haven't gone in my pictures for awhile, check
out my new GARDEN pics and new SCRAPBOOK pics. Had a spectacular spring
and early summer in the garden, but it's time to weed out and prune
down the fading plants and plant some new things. I got my first zuchinni
this just last week, and there's some green tomatoes, but none ready
yet. I can't wait!
Went to the Book Expo at the Los Angeles Staples Convention
Center . It was my first one and WOW! is all I can say. It's huge!
Harlequin had a beautiful booth with lots of signing authors, including
Susan Mallery, Jill Shalvis, Judy Christenberry, Debbie Macomber, Stef
Ann Holm and Jeanetter Baker just to name a few. I'll get a couple
of pictures up of the event into my Scrapbook. Check it out.
Following the Book Expo, I went to Las Vegas for five
days, a mix of play and work. Got together with Jo Leigh and Debbi
Rawlins and Teresa Southwick to plot books and spent a couple of days
with my hubbie and my son and his girlfriend seeing the sights. Had
a great time. (No, I didn't win big! Next time!)
RWA conference in New York is right around the corner.
I'm not ready! There just aren't enough hours in the day! I really
need to figure out how not to sleep!
Hope everyone out there has a great summer. Check in
with me from time to time to say hi. I'll be starting on my FIRST NEWSLETTER
right away and get that off to everyone. Stay cool and Happy Reading
!
All the Best,

May 9th
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY to everyone! Though I lost my mother
two years ago, I still have my eighty-six-year old mother-in-law, Angie.
She's a true angel. I'll spend the day with my hubbie and kids and
let them wait on me. A champagne breakfast sounds good...
CONGRATS TO DANALYN EFRUS again for winning my teddy
bear basket. I love the picture she sent me. My webmanager will be
selecting my next winner on May 10th. Good luck to everyone! Also,
we'll be selecting two winners from my guest book to receive an autographed
copy of TAMING BLACKHAWK, my RITA nominee for best short contemporary
of 2002. I really do love to give stuff away! Keep watching, you never
know when I'll throw in something new on a whim!
I'm currently working on putting together a NEWSLETTER
to go out to everyone who has signed my guest book, but it's taking
me longer than I thought. (Work just seems to get in the way of life,
doesn't it? Thank goodness I love my work!) Hopefully I'll have my
first issue out in a week or two. I have a lot to share and I can't
wait to hear everyone's responses.
SPRING FEVER IS HERE! My garden is really taking shape--come
see my new pictures in my Garden Album. My veggies are growing nicely,
but all the rain and cloudy weather here have slowed growth on everything.
I love early to mid-summer, until it gets too hot, and I can't work
in the garden other than early morning. Also, I will have some new
pictures up in my Scrapbook next week from my Easter bash, and I've
put up a recipe of Eve's Vegetable Salad with a picture, too. (See
insert on left). Eve Griffin and her daughters are long time friends
(more like family). She brings this salad every year to Easter
and we all love it. If you like fresh, crunchy vegetables, you'll enjoy
this for sure.
Happy May, Happy Mother's Day, and on Memorial Day, remember
all those brave men and women who died in service for this wonderful
country we live in.
God Bless America!

March 24
I'm so happy to announce I'M A RITA FINALIST. TAMING
BLACKHAWK, a May Desire, has been nominated for best short contemporary
of 2002. What a thrill it was to get the call from Romance Writer's
of America this past Saturday. Though I don't know who the other nominees
are yet, I'm so honored to be among them. The RITA awards are held
at RWA national conference every year, and are the Oscars of romance
novels. It's a beautiful, fun, glitzy night, this year in New York
. I'll be there with bells on. Win or lose this beautiful statue, I'm
a happy writer! Can't wait to call my editor, Melissa Jeglinski and
tell her we've got another book nominated. (This is my 7th nomination!
After I lost last year, Carla Cassidy told me that I'd be a Lucky Seven.
Thanks, Carla!)
Once again, I want to thank everyone who has dropped
me a note in my guest book. I'm so touched by all your wonderful comments.
Especially now, with what is going
on in the world, it's difficult to concentrate on my
work. Your words have been a wonderful source of inspiration to me.
I intend to e-mail a note back to everyone soon, so please be patient
with me.
Had a beautiful week in sunny California and I managed
to get a few more flowers in, but still don't have my veggies in yet.
My garden is slowly shaping up and I hope to have everything in place
for my traditional brunch for fifty at Easter. It's always a fun day,
though hectic, but after twenty years, I've got a system worked out.
Getting my yard in shape is the most work, but it's definitely worth
it. I'll be sure and post pictures of the event and share a recipe
or two.
One more week and a lucky winner will be selected from
my guest book entries. I'm putting together a basket now, and can't
wait to give |
